Water for Kamosiro primary school in Kenya

H2O for Life- Thirsting for a drop of water

H2O for Life- Thirsting for a drop of water
Project Summary

Kamosiro Primary School is located near Bomet, Kenya. The school currently has no access to water other than a long walk to a polluted stream. Toilets are inadequate for the numbers of students, and are in poor condition. There are no hand-washing stations available.

H2O for Life in conjunction with Waterlines, will provide rainwater catchment tanks, VIP pit latrines and hand-washing stations along with hygiene education at the school.

Waterlines has been an implementing organization in the area for over 10 years, and provides sustainable projects that encourage community ownership. H2O for Life Schools will provide half the funds needed for the project, and Waterlines will match every dollar raised. Together a much needed WASH in Schools project will be provided at Kamosiro school.

Issues

Currently, students at Kamosiro school must walk long distances to collect water from a polluted source. Usually there is no time to boil the water resulting in unsafe water for students to drink during their school day. Latrines are in poor condition, and do not meet the needs of the students. Hand-washing stations along with hygiene education will help reduce illnesses at the school.

Goals

H2O for Life Schools will study the issues surrounding the "Water Crisis" in the world, and will take action to raise funds for their partner school, Kamosiro Primary. H2O for Life will provide educational resources for teachers to take part in a transformational and educational service learning opportunity for their classes and school. H2O will provide a completed project photo to the US school, letting students know that they have, indeed, made a difference in the lives of students in Kenya.

Progress To-Date

Waterlines has completed an assessment of Kamosiro school and has designed an appropriate, sustainable project to bring WASH in Schools to the school. With the help of community labor, collection of available local materials, and funds provided by H2O for Life Schools, Kamosiro School will receive an improved source of water, adequate latrines and hand-washing stations.
