Bring clean water to rural Ethiopia

Water.org projects in Ethiopia are in the Tigray and Oromiya regions. Water.org projects typically involve borehole wells which serve the community. At schools, roof rainwater catchment systems may be used.
The need for water in Ethiopia is severe and is an issue of both scarcity and access. In the last 20 years, Ethiopia has experienced recurring droughts followed by food shortages and famines. During times of drought, water-related diseases are rampant. Surface water sources such as springs and ponds dry up. Remaining water sources are heavily contaminated by environmental waste, such as human and animal excreta, which is washed in when it does rain. The stagnant water serves as a breeding place for mosquitoes. In times of drought, there is often not enough water available for people to bathe regularly. Diarrheal and water-related diseases are among the principle causes of death in young children.
We envision the day when everyone in the world can take a safe drink of water.
Water.org doesn’t build water systems for people, but with people. We believe that local people know their own needs best. That’s why we work through high-quality partner organizations based in the developing world that share this philosophy. It's also why the communities we serve are actively involved in all stages of their water project. Community involvement ensures the use of appropriate technology and fosters sustainability. And integrating all projects with health and hygiene education ensures that the benefits of safe water continue for many years to come. We also offer innovative financing methods through our WaterCredit Initiative, empowering local communities to develop and sustain solutions to their own water needs.
Our programs in Ethiopia have served 60,400 people, providing access to safe water and sanitation.
