Provide micro-grants and training to displaced people returning home
Action Against Hunger - Livelihoods in Uganda

Action Against Hunger is working with families in the Lango and Acholi districts of Northern Uganda who have recently returned to their homes after years of living in displacement camps. The organization is also working with destitute agro-pastoralists and pastoralists affected by recurrent droughts in the Karamoja region. Action Against Hunger is working to increase and diversify agricultural production and household income, increase environmental awareness and disaster preparedness, and restore livelihoods and nutritional status of families affected by HIV/AIDS.
The humanitarian organization is carrying out the following activities:
- Conducting technical training and providing micro-grant support to small business owners
- Providing training and agricultural and technical support to farmers
-Improving farmers' access and linkages to local markets for produce
- Increasing families' access to fodder stocks, animal health services, and water points
- Increasing environmental awareness through discussion groups and community participatory activities
- Providing training in environmental impact mitigation activities, including fuel efficient stoves and agro-forestry
- Training in income and food source diversification activities for households affected by HIV/AIDS
- Improving nutrition status and health awareness through nutrition education and cooking sessions
Decades of conflict and displacement have resulted in a loss of livelihoods, assets, land, and income opportunities, as well as diminished agricultural productivity. As a result, over 60 percent of the population in this area lives below the poverty line. Recurrent droughts have decimated the size of local pastoralists' herds.
Action Against Hunger is mobilizing to reach some 18,000 beneficiaries with its programs.
